Brazilian Landless Workers Movement (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra) (MST) is the largest social movement in Latin America. Since 1985 hundreds of thousands of landless peasants have carried out land invasions while at the same time campaigning for long-overdue land reform. More than 250,000 families have won land titles to over 15 million acres after MST land takeovers. Some 60% of Brazil's farmland lies idle while 25 million peasant struggle to survive by working in temporary agricultural jobs.
