This paper promotes the case for building societies in the UK.

The first section describes the current role of societies and includes a factual description of their size and scope.

The second section examines the advantages of the building societies model for both the members of societies and for the UK financial system as a whole.

The third section questions the reasons for conversion to Plc and bank status that have been given over the last few years.

The concluding note highlights the role building societies have played in expanding homeownership and in the alleviation of financial exclusion.
